About Signalling

MF - Multi-Frequency, used by most common-control offices after the 1950s. Eventually replaced older forms of DC signalling.

RP - Revertive Pulse, used by the panel switch, and later by the Number 1 Crossbar for backward compatibility. On calls to panel, listen for RP after the thousands digit, and all successive digits. On calls to 1XB (833), listen for RP after the hundreds digit and all successive digits.

DO - Distant Office , not strictly a signalling method, but used to indicate that extra office selections are made prior to the normal RP selections. On Distant Office calls (365, 524) listen for office selections to start immediately after the 3rd digit is dialed. It will continue after each successive digit. On regular RP calls, the office frame will be skipped.

PCI - Panel Call Indicator, initially used to signal forward to manual 'B' operators. Later used for panel and crossbar tandems. Consists of 20 pulses, each being some combination of heavy, light, negative, positive, neutral.

IAO - Intraoffice Call, also not a signalling method, since intraoffice calls in the 5XB do not "signal" at all. The Completing Marker marks and closes crosspoints without any pulsing necessary.

DP - Dial Pulse, used in Strowger/Step-by-Step/CDO offices of various types. Merely repeats the dialed digits forward just like they came from a rotary dial.

About ANI

The Number 1 Crossbar ANI-B equipment will perform a calling directory number lookup on all outgoing long distance calls (for instance, to Phreaknet). This lookup happens after the 7 digit MF outpulsing by the subscriber sender. A momentary 5800 hz tone is placed on the sleeve lead, followed by an MF spill of the calling number. Even though the 5800 hz tone is audible on historic recordings, it is not audible at the museum (for now), because the short lengths of our trunks do not provide enough inductive coupling for this kind of artifact to come through. At some point, I'll build some artificial lines to make the tone audible.
